There is a small shared garden for outdoor meals in summer and snowmen in winter. At the crossroads of five high Alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified town in the 14th century. A Dauphiné town and the seat of important trade fairs, it is the capital of the Escartons. Located at the convergence of five valleys - Haute-Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes and Cerveyrette - the town of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical position. The radiating structure of these valleys provided the town with relatively easy external access very early on: to Provence, Queyras, Isère, Drôme and what is now Italy.
